Use c3p0 connection pooling with JPA

Add the following to your POM:

<artifactId>c3p0</artifactId>
<version>0.9.1.2</version>
</dependency>


Add the following to your persistence.xml:


<property name="connection.provider_class" value="org.hibernate.connection.C3P0ConnectionProvider"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.min_size" value="5"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.max_size" value="20"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.timeout" value="300"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.max_statements" value="50"/>
<property name="hibernate.c3p0.idle_test_period" value="300"/>


You can verify c3p0 is working by using jconsole (in your java/bin) and connecting to your running Tomcat instance. If jmx isn't enabled, you can enable it by providing the following JAVA_OPTS in catalina.sh:

-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=3000
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.authenticate=false
-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.ssl=false
